Trip to the Moldavian Monasteries

  • Bus tour
  • 2 days
  • Perfect for small or middle sized groups

Bukovina, a small but beautiful region, with a charming landscape, wonderful mountains and woods, is considered to be the cradle of Romanian orthodoxy.  The monasteries are adorned with rich fresco-cycles that decorate the only the inner , but also the outer walls. Thus, the scenes create a vivid, imposing image of the Christianity at that time.

Day 1: From Cluj to the Moldavian Monasteries

We drive from Cluj to Bistrița, a city greatly influenced by Saxon culture. At the beginning of the 20th century, 50% of the inhabitants were still Saxons. Here, we visit an Evangelical Church from the 14th century. Over Tihuța Pass, well-known because of Bram Stoker’s novel “Dracula”, we reach Bukovina, where we see the famous monasteries that have been listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. First, we visit the Moldovița Monastery, where one of the nuns will tell us more about the everyday life of the nuns. Then, we go to Sucevița, the ‘Pearl of the Moldavian Monasteries’, and to the ceramics workshop in Marginea. Dinner and accommodation in Sucevița or Vama.

Day 2: Monasteries round-trip

Today, we see the Humor Monastery, in a red background tint, founded by a noble family. Then, we visit the Voroneț Monastery or ‘The Sistine Chapel of the East’, one of the best preserved monasteries of the 15th century. It is especially famous for the deep blue shade of its frescoes, known in Romania as ‘Voroneț Blue’. Afterwards, we drive back to Cluj.
