Transylvania – History and Nature in the Retezat Mountains
- Bus tour
- 2 days
- Perfect for small or middle sized groups
During this tour, we see medieval monuments in the Hațeg region and breathtaking landscapes in the Retezat Mountains. This tour combines the beauty of the landscapes and the rich history of our country. One of the most beautiful castles in Romania awaits discovery. With more than 60 peaks over 2300 m and over 100 crystal clear, deep glacier lakes, the Retezat Mountains offer some of the most beautiful sights in the Carpathians. In 1935, the Romanian Government set aside an area of the Retezat Mountains, creating the country’s first national park. Currently, the park has 381 km2. The area shelters one of Europe’s last remaining intact old-growth forest and the continent’s largest single area of pristine mixed forest. The highest peak of the Retezat Mountains, Peleaga (2509 m) is located in this park.
Day 1: Hunyadi Castle
The Hunyadi Castle has the name of its former owner. It was built in 1452 in the Gothic style by Johann Hunyadi and his son Matthew Corvin on lime stone. In the surroundings of the small town of Hațeg, we find a unique mosaic from the early Middle Ages and Antiquity. The old churches from Strei and Sântămăria–Orlea are also part of this day’s program. Overnight stay in Strei.
Day 2: Hiking through the Retezat National Park
The Transylvanian Alps in the middle of Romania host the oldest and most beautiful national park in the Carpathians. The landscape is impressive with high peaks, green valleys, and glacial lakes. Drive back to Timișoara.
