City Tours

Timișoara is an important university center with an emphasis on subjects like medicine, mechanics and electro-technology. It was the first European city to be lit by electric street lamps in 1884. It was also the second European and the first city in Romania with horse-drawn trams in 1867. So, in many ways it was ahead of the capital itself. Moreover, there are numerous claims that Gustave Eiffel, the creator of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, built one of Timișoara’s footbridges over the Bega River.

Short tour – 2 hours

We visit the old city centre, formerly known as ‘the inner city’ because it was completely surrounded by fortification walls. The tour starts in Union Square (the Baroque treasure room of Timișoara).
The next stop is the Theresia Bastion, the largest preserved piece of the fortification, then the Freedom Square. The tour finishes in the Opera Square, known today as the Victory Square. It serves as a reminder of the events in December 1989 that started the Revolution.

Grand tour – 3 hours

After visiting the city center, we see the Prefecture and the ‘Banatia’ buildings, and then the ‘Fabric’ city district. Here, we see the Fabric Synagogue and Millennium Church.
