Full Day Tour: Turda Salt Mine – Rimetea Village – Coltesti Citadel

Turda was once the most important economic center in this region. Salt, also known as ‘white gold’, has been extracted from the Turda Salt Mine since the Roman Age. This mine, dating from the 17th century, was a decisive factor in the development of this town from Roman times until today and is now a veritable history museum of salt mining. We spend the afternoon in the Transylvanian western mountains in Rimetea. The chalk white houses and the harmonious structure of the village earned it several distinctions; for instance, it was named ‘The most beautiful village in Transylvania’ and received the ‘Europa Nostra Peris’ award. We hike around 1 hour to the ruins of the Colțesti fortress, giving us an impressive view of the valley. In the evening, we drive back to Cluj-Napoca.

Full Day Tour: The Dracula Tour

The medieval town center of Sighișoara is very well preserved (UNESCO World Heritage Site). We walk through the citadel and visit, among others, the emblem of the town, the Clock Tower, the Church on the Hill, the Citadel, the fortified walls and towers of the town and also the birthplace of the Wallachian leader Vlad Dracul, who later became known as Count Dracula in Gothic literature and film. Here, we also enjoy a shot of local plum brandy. In the afternoon, we drive across Transylvania towards Bran Castle, also known as the ‚Dracula Castle‘. The impressive fortification dates back to the 14th century and has a lot of stories to tell, some related to the myth of Dracula, but some also related to the the Romanian royal family.  Drive back to Cluj-Napoca.

Through the Transylvanian highland we drive towards Sighișoara. The medieval city center of Sighișoara is very well preserved (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Drive over Baia Mare to Surdesti Village where we visit the tallest old wooden church in Romania. Drive over the spectacular Gutin Pass to Sapanta to visit the colourful Merry Cemetery. In the afternoon, we visit the secluded village of Poienile Izei with its small UNESCO wooden church. We also visit a pottery workshop in the area before we drive back to Cluj-Napoca.

Full Day Tour: Turda Saltmines – Hunyadi Castle – Alba Iulia

Drive to Turda, one of the most important economic centre in this region under the habsburg rule. We will visit the Turda Saltmines dating back to the 13th century, but heavily modified by the habsburgs in the 18th century. Next stop is Hunedoara.We’ll have the opportunity to visit Corvins’ Castle from the council room to the torture chamber. Our next stop is Alba Iulia to see the outstanding Habsburg citadel. Drive back to Cluj-Napoca.

Full Day Tour: Sibiu – Cultural Capital of Europe in 2007

Drive southwards on the former roman road to Sibiu. During our city tour we see the Evangelical Church, the Council Tower, the Large and the Small Square, the Liars’ Bridge, the Peasants’ Market, etc. In the afternoon you’ll sample a a typical fortified church in Cristian. 2 Day Tour: Rural Maramureș

On the first day, you will be driven over the Carpathian Mountains to arrive in the region of Maramureș. Here, we visit the tallest wooden church in Șurdești, before visiting a popular artist from the area. You will be served a traditional lunch consisting of local dishes from the area, and in the afternoon you will visit the Merry Cemetery in Săpânța. Your day will conclude with an overnight stay in a 3-star guesthouse in the countryside.

On the second day you will embark on a breathtaking tour on a steam train. You will wind along the secluded, meandering Vaser Valley. At the final destination, you will be invited to a barbecue lunch. In the afternoon you will visit the wooden church of Bogdan Voda, before being driven back to Cluj-Napoca.

2 Day Tour: Castle Tour

On the first day, we drive to Sighișoara where we admire the most beautiful medieval townscape in the country, which is often used as a film set. We visit the Clock Tower, the Church on the Hill, the Citadel, the fortified walls and towers of the town, as well as the birthplace of the Wallachian leader Vlad Dracul, who later became known as Count Dracula in Gothic literature and film. Next, we head on to Viscri, a secluded village housing a royal residence, that of King Charles of Britain. We visit his home and the fortified church. Afterwards, arrival at Bran Castle, also known as the Dracula Castle. The Bran Castle Museum is located on the former border between Transylvania and Walachia. Also known as the Dracula Castle, it was built in 1377 to safeguard the trading route between Transylvania and Walachia, enlarged and restored a few times since then. This castle is known as the homestead of Vlad Țepeș (Vlad the Impaler) and it’s the most visited attraction in Romania. The writer Bram Stoker brought the fame of the Dracula myth in our country at the beginning of the 20th century. Dinner and accommodation in Bran or Brasov.

On the second day we visit the Peleș Palace, the summer residence of the Romanian royal family (and one of the most beautiful royal summer residences in Europe), a modern palace built at the end at the 19th century to resemble castles from the late middle ages, and the main attraction in Sinaia. Its generously furnished rooms host, among others, a fresco by Gustav Klimt. Our next destination is the Kalnoky Castle, a 17th century countryside castle belonging to a family of Hungarian noblemen, built with a mixture of late Renaissance and neo-classic architecture and surrounded by a 19th century English-style park. Drive back to Cluj later in the afternoon.

Full Day Tour: Bonțida – Gherla – Nicula – Sik

The Banffy Castle in Bonțida is gradually regaining its former beauty. The castle was the property of the Banffy family for centuries. Today, it is a historic building under protection and, thanks to the donations made by Prince Charles of Wales and several other international organizations, the castle has regained its splendour.
Gherla, formerly known as Armenopolis, is one of the three Transylvanian cities founded by Armenians. Here, we visit the Armenian Catholic Church, whose altar was painted by Rubens. We spend the afternoon visiting the Nicula Monastery. The monastery is a well-known pilgrimage site and it has a miraculous icon of the Mother of God. Afterwards, we visit the Hungarian village of Sik/Szek. The women here still wear often dark red clothes in memory of the people who died during the last Mongol invasion in 1717.

Full Day Tour: Aiud – Alba Iulia – Sebeș – Câlnic

In Aiud, we visit one of the oldest fortified churches in Transylvania. Then, we go to Alba Iulia to see an outstanding castle in the Vauban style. The Orthodox Cathedral is located near a 1000-year-old Catholic cathedral.
In Sebeș, we see the Evangelical Parish Church that has a remarkable altar created by the famous artist Veit Stoss. Then, we visit Câlnic – a rare castle belonging to a count and dating back to the 12th century. Return to Cluj-Napoca.

Full Day Tour: Cluj-Napoca

We spend the day visiting Cluj-Napoca. We see the former Dominican monastery, Matthew Corvin’s birthplace, St. Michael’s Church, and the former city hall. In the Banffy Palace, we admire paintings made by Romanian and German artists. The main building of the Babeș-Bolyai University is a symbol for this city that has around 100,000 students. We also visit the Orthodox Church and the world’s third largest Botanical Garden. The open-air museum of Transylvanian traditions is our next stop. In the evening, we enjoy an organ concert.
