Ukraine is an interesting country with impressive nature and cities. Its highlights are the city of Kiev, old Galicia, northern Bukovina with the cities Lviv and Chernivtsi, and the wooden churches. The traditions and daily lives of the people offer insight into their culture and beliefs.
Day 1: Journey to Debrecen
We start our journey in Vienna and drive through Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Late in the afternoon we arrive in Debrecen, near the Ukrainian border. Dinner and overnight stay in Debrecen.
Day 2: Debrecen – Mukachevo
In the morning, we leave Hungary and cross the border into Ukraine. Our final stop will be Mukachevo, a significant settlement of Transcarpathia and a former part of the Hungarian Kingdom and of Czechoslovakia. The city is now a rail terminus and highway junction. During our city tour in Mukachevo, we admire the Palanok Castle, the centre with its historic monuments, the White Castle, and Prince Rakoczi’s residence. Dinner and overnight stay in Mukachevo.
Day 3: Mukachevo – Ivano Frankivsk
After breakfast, departure to Ivano Frankivsk, the administrative center of Ivano Frankivsk, a province (or oblast) in western Ukraine. The university city has approximately 200.000 inhabitants and is located in the Carpathian area.
During our city tour in Ivano Frankivsk we admire the Old Town and its historic buildings that create that special medieval atmosphere. Dinner and overnight stay in Ivano Frankivsk.
Day 4: Ivano Franivsk – Hotin – Chernivtsi
On our way to Chernivtsi, we make a short stop to visit the Folk Art Museum from Kolomya. Then we drive through the famous historic area of Bukovina and arrive in Hotin. Hotin is known for its impressive fortress that was built in the 13th century. Dinner and overnight stay in Chernivitsi.
Day 5: Chernivtsi
We start our day with a city tour of the former capital of Bukovina. The residence of the Bishop of Bukovina, the Armenian Church, St. Nicholas Church, and the theatre are the major attractions of the city. Dinner and overnight in Chernivtsi.
Day 6: Chernivtsi – Kamjanek-Podilski – Lviv
In the morning, we drive to Kamjanek-Podilski, a well-known fortified town from the 15th century. After a short visit of the most impressive buildings (the town hall, the St. Peter and Paul Church), we continue our journey to Lviv. In the late afternoon we arrive in Lviv, a city located in the Galicia area.
Day 7: Lviv – The Capital of Galicia
Lviv was founded in 1250 by King Danylo Halitsky and named it after his son Lev. During its development, Lviv became religiously and ethnically diverse. In 1772, the city received the title of capital of the Austro – Hungarian Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. The city tour is followed by a leisure program. Dinner and overnight stay in Lviv.
Day 8: Lviv – Sarospatak
After breakfast, departure to Skole, one of the last cities that we visit in Ukraine. We leave Ukraine behind and drive to the Chop-Zahony border crossing, where we cross into Hungary. In Hungary we continue our way through the famous Hungarian wine region called Tokaj. Dinner and overnight stay in Tokaj.
Day 9: Return Trip
The first stop of the day will be in Eger for a city tour. After that, we drive to Budapest. Return flight.
