Boat Trip to the Iron Gates

  • Bus tour
  • 3 days
  • Perfect for small or middle-sized groups

The Iron Gates are a gorge on the Danube River that stretches for 134 km. It forms part of the border between Serbia and Romania. Here, we find a hydroelectric dam with two power stations, Iron Gate I Hydro Power Plant and Iron Gate II Hydro Power Plant. The Iron Gates were once a dangerous spot for the boats crossing the Danube. Today, the wild scenery welcomes tourists who visit this corner of Romania.

Day 1: Bucharest – Turnu Severin

Drive through Pitești and Craiova to Turnu Severin. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 2: Boat Trip to the Iron Gates

Breakfast at the hotel. Sailing on the Danube through the Iron Gates was previously considered a death trap for boatmen. Although the cliffs – which were initially very dangerous – were flooded by water coming through the reservoirs, the landscape didn’t lose its beautiful features. We cross the narrow gorge and the large basin with a boat and we see the incredible river landscape. Then, we visit the St. Ana Monastery where, from the top of the mountain, we have a great bird’s eye view of the river. Finally, once we arrive in Drobeta Turnu Severin, we look for Roman vestiges, namely the remains of the famous bridge over the Danube built by Emperor Trajan and designed by Apollodorus of Damascus. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 3: Turnu Severin – Bucharest

Drive along the Southern Carpathians to Bucharest. On our way, we see forgotten villages nestled at the foothills of the mountains. We visit the Horezu Monastery and pottery center.
