The Banat Highlands are a large open-air museum. Here, we discover the beauty of the Romanian landscape in one of the most spectacular regions of Europe: the Danube Gorges. Discover the secrets of this region, its culture and the way people live here. The Iron Gates Natural Park is an outdoor geological atlas with a series of nationally renowned geological and paleontological points of interest. The complexity of the geological structure and tectonics led to the formation of a varied landscape ranging from valleys to gentle hills to massive mountains and slopes. 18 nature reserves were established on the park territory. On the southern boundary of the park, we find the longest (134 km) and one of the most spectacular narrow gorges in Europe created by the Danube. The park was designed to protect and preserve existing biodiversity and landscape elements.

Day 1: Lugoj – Țășna Canyon – Turnu Severin

Our first stop is Lugoj. The city center has kept its Baroque charm which is typical for rural market places. At noon, we visit the health resort Băile Herculane, an architectural treasure from the times when Austrian monarchs came here for treatments based on mineral water. In the afternoon, we undertake a 3-hour hiking trip in Țășna Canyon and we admire the wildness of the landscape. Dinner and overnight stay in Turnu Severin.

Day 2: The Iron Gates – Oravița – Timișoara

Breakfast at the hotel. Sailing on the Danube through Iron Gates used to be considered a death trap for boatmen. Although the cliffs – which were initially very dangerous – were flooded by water coming through the reservoirs, the landscape didn’t lose its beautiful features.  The small city of Oravița received in the 18^th century a large number of colonists from Austria who brought with them the Viennese lifestyle. That’s why we find here the oldest theater in southeast Europe, an architectural copy of the Viennese theater. Drive back to Timișoara.
