Maramureș – located in the north-western part of the country – is Romania’s most pristine region due to its many customs and traces of a unique wood architecture and to the fact that traditional lifestyles are still predominant. Here, wood has been one of the main construction materials for centuries and the wooden churches are representative for the architecture that developed in this area.

Bukovina, a small but beautiful region, with a charming landscape, wonderful mountains and woods, is considered to be the cradle of Romanian orthodoxy.  The monasteries are adorned with rich fresco-cycles that decorate the inner walls but also the outside walls. Thus, the scenes create a vivid, imposing image of the Christianity at that time.

Day 1: Drive to Maramureș

Today, we drive towards Maramureș. We visit here the tallest old wooden church in Surdesti and the charming preserved village of Breb. In the afternoon we arrive at a unique attraction, the Happy Cemetery in Sapanta. Overnight stay in Sighetu Marmației.

Day 2: Maramureș and Iza Valley

Drive through the green Iza Valley. Visit the new Barsana Monastery with modern naive paintings. Afterwards we visit a wood workshop in Barsana. In the afternoon we take a side road to a more secluded village in Poienile Izei with church. In the area we will also visit a pottery workshop – Overnight stay in Viseu.

Day 3: Steam Train on the Vaser River Valley

Today we take part in the tour with the steam train on the Vaser River Valley. Through the wild scenery, we arrive at the end station, where a big barbeque awaits for lunch. Afterwards, we drive to Bukovina to visit the Moldovița Monastery. Overnight stay in Vama.

Day 4: The Moldavian Monasteries in Bukovina

Today’s sights include the monastery in Voroneț – ‘The Sistine Chapel of the East’ – painted in a blue background colour and painted eggs museum in Vama. Drive back to Cluj.
