Transylvania (Latin for ‘the land beyond the forest’) is the Romanian region with the most significant cultural diversity. A breathtaking scenery enhances the beauty of this region. There are plenty of tourist attractions, from the well-known Dracula’s Castle to the medieval cities (Cluj, Sibiu, Brașov) and the fortified Saxon churches.
Day 1: Arrival in Cluj-Napoca
Arrival in Cluj-Napoca and meeting with the guide at the airport, then transfer to the hotel. Welcome dinner and accommodation in Cluj-Napoca.
Day 2: Cluj-Napoca – Sighișoara – Bran – Brașov (300 km, ~ 5h)
After breakfast, a city tour of Cluj: among others, we will see Piața Unirii, Matthew Corvin’s birthplace, Saint Michael’s Church, the former city hall, the Orthodox Cathedral and the main building of the Babeș-Bolyai University. Next, we’ll drive to Sighișoara to admire the most beautiful medieval townscape in Romania. You’ll also see the Clock Tower, the Church on the Hill, the Citadel, the former defensive towers and walls of the city and the birthplace of the Walachian leader Vlad Dracul, who later became known as Count Dracula in Gothic literature and film. We are invited to a traditional schnapps tasting in a local guest house. Drive to Bran. Afterwards, arrival at Bran Castle, also known as the Dracula Castle. The Bran Castle Museum is located on the former border between Transylvania and Walachia. Also known as the Dracula Castle, it was built in 1377 to safeguard the trading route between Transylvania and Walachia, enlarged and restored a few times since then. This castle is known as the homestead of Vlad Țepeș (Vlad the Impaler) and it’s the most visited attraction in Romania. The writer Bram Stoker brought the fame of the Dracula myth in our country at the beginning of the 20th century. Dinner and accommodation in Bran.
Day 3: Bran – Brașov – Sâmbăta de Sus – Rășinari (200 km, ~ 4 h)
During our city tour in Brașov we will see the city square and the historic monuments of the city. The main attraction is the Black Church, built in the 14th century in the Gothic style. Here we’ll also find a large collection of Oriental carpets, unique in Europe. We’ll travel along the most beautiful side of the Carpathian mountain range to get to Făgăraș. Here, we will visit the medieval fortress in the middle of the city. Further drive to Sâmbăta de Sus, where we will visit a spectacular orthodox monastery set right at the foothills of the imposing Făgăraș mountains. Afterwards, drive to Rășinari in a local guest house. Traditional dinner and accommodation in Rășinari.
Day 4: Sibiu and Surroundings (100 km, ~ 1 h 30 min)
Drive to Sibiu. A walk through the city centre will take you along narrow alleys, old houses, palaces, churches and towers. Among others you’ll visit the following sights in the historical centre: the Evangelical Church, the Council Tower, the Large and the Small Square, the Liars’ Bridge, the farmers’ market etc. Free time in the afternoon. Traditional dinner and accommodation in Rășinari.
Day 5: Rășinari – Turda – Cluj-Napoca (200 km, ~ 3 h)
After breakfast we visit the habsburg city of Alba Iulia, an impressive baroque fortress. Traditional lunch in the Hungarian village of Rimetea. Afterwards, we stop in Turda to see the salt mine. This mine, dating from the 17th century was a decisive factor in the development of this town from Roman times until today and is now a veritable history museum of salt mining. Drive to Cluj-Napoca. Overnight stay in Cluj-Napoca.
Day 6: Departure
Transfer to airport and departure.
